  Hemkund Sahib
A six-hour steep trek from Ghangharia welcomes you at Hemkund Sahib, an important Sikh pilgrimage destination. However, the pilgrimage site is not only flocked to by Sikhs. An equal number of Hindu pilgrims also arrive here to seek blessings. An important feature of Hemkund Sahib is its wonderful location; it remains skirted by seven snow-laden peaks. The glaciers originating from Hathi Parvat and Saptrishi peaks water the lake at Hemkund. The lake also gives rise to a small stream namely Himganga. Hemkund Sahib in Uttarakhand remains perched at an elevation of 4,329 m above sea level.

Best Time to Visit
Sikhs flock to Hemkund Sahib all the year round. However, the ideal time to come here is between the months of July and September.

Mythological Background
Hemkund Sahib has been referred to a highly significant site in the holy Guru Granth Sahib. According to the holy book, it is at Hemkund that Guru Govind Singh, the 10th guru of the Sikhs, had meditated in one of his earlier births. Hindus hold it in high regard because they believe that Lakshmana, brother of Lord Rama, had performed meditation on the banks of the lake to recover from his enjuries and restore health.

Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara
On the banks of the lake is located the Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara. The  gurudwara is built in the shape of a star. The Lakshman Ganga River originates frm an outlet at the rear side of the gurudwara.

Govindghat
The pilgrimage journey to Hemkund Sahib starts at Ghangharia, 19 km away. The scenic trek that leads you to the pilgrimage site is full of forests, small streams, glaciers and a variety of wild flowers. Also get to see Brahama Kamal, the state flower of Uttarakhand.

Reaching the Pilgrimage Site
Hemkund Sahib lies at a distance of 334 km from Dehradun whereas the closest domestic airport Jolly Grant is at 307 km. If you are coming by rail route, get down at Rishikesh and undertake a road journey of 293 km. From Ghangharia onwards, enjoy a trek for around 5-6 hours. By road routes, Hemkund Sahib is easily accessible from key places like Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital and Ranikhet among others.
