  Kedarnath
The pilgrimage town of Kedarnath completes the Chardham circuit along with Badrinathji, Gangotri and Yamunotri. The stone carved temple at Kedarnath enshrines the ‘lingam’, the phallic symbol of Lord Shiva. The landscapes that surround the temple add much beauty to the overall appearance. These astonishing mountain landscapes also offer numerous scenic treks for travelers. Like other places located in the state of Uttarakhand, Kedarnath too is blessed with great bounties of nature. Therefore, you can look forward to enjoying some wonderful treks that take you through forested valleys. Also watch pilgrims in the act of performing ablutions in River Mandakini.

Best Time to Visit
It would be beast to make a tour to Kedarnath in Uttarakhand between the months of May and October. Monsoon season should be avoided. Carry light woolens during summer and heavy woolens to protect yourself against the chill of winter.

Mythological Background
The pilgrimage destination of Kedarnath has the distinction of being counted among the 12 jyotirlingas. The shrine at Kedarnath has been mentioned at many places in the Mahabharata, famous Hindu epic. According to the Hindu mythology, Pandavas went to Lord Shiva to seek his blessings after the battle of Mahabharata ended. In order to elude, Lord Shiva fled from them and turned himself into a bull at Kedarnath.

Places to See
The biggest draw for tourists and devotees at Kedarnath is undoubtedly the Kedarnath Temple, constructed far back in 8th century by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. Do remember to explore the architecture and the decorations on the inner temple walls.

Shankaracharya Samadhi
Hindus believe that Adi Shankaracharya, after setting up the chardham destinations, took Samadhi at a young age of 32 years. Just behind the Kedarnath Temple is situated Shankaracharya’s Samadhi. Do not miss to visit the site.

Vasuki Lake
If you wish to enjoy heart stirring views of the Chaukhamba peaks, head straight to the Vasuki Lake. The lake occupies a position at an elevation of 4,135 m above sea level. It lies at a distance of just 6 km from the Kedarnath shrine.

Reaching Kedarnath Shrine
Those who don’t mind walking a few kilometers or wish to enjoy some scenic treks can first get to Gaurikund, 14 km away from Kedarnath. Those who do not want to trek can also enjoy a horse or a palanquin ride from Gaurikund onwards. Regular bus services and taxis connect Gaurikund with key destinations in Uttarakhand including Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh.
