The northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh is steeped in religion, myths and legends. Among numerous pilgrimage destinations that the state features, the twin cities of Mathura and Vrindavan are known for their unique spiritual significance. Related with Lord Krishna, these places even today reverbrate with his numerous legends. Both the cities, placed at a distance of 15 km from each other, occupy a location on the riverbanks of Yamuna. While Mathura is the place where Lord Krishna was born, Vrindavan happens to be his playground during his childhood days. The pilgrimage town of Mathura is easily accessible from key Indian destinations like Delhi (145 km) and Agra (58 km).

Best Time to Visit
If you wish to witness the fervour of devotees at its peak, plan your pilgrimage tour to Mathura and Vrindavan in the month of August.

Mythological Background
Also referred to as the Braj Bhumi, the holy cities of Mathura and Vrindavan are redolent with the stories and legends of Lord Krishna. After Krishna was born in Mathura, the city was heavenly blessed and filled with eternal light. While still a child, Krishna was very popular for serenading his gopis. All the childhood stroies of Lord Krishna are still alive on the divine soil of Vrindava.

Places to See
Just a day or two are not enough to explore the spiritual riches of Mathura and Vrindavan. The temples (that simply abound here!), the ghats and the ashrams are the major pilgrimage attractions in these cities.

Shri Krishna Janmasthan Temple
It is the sacred site where Krishna took birth. Also located here is a tank, known as Potara Kund, where Krishna's nappies were cleaned. Visitors are allowed inside the temple between 0600 hours and 1200 hours and between 1500 hours and 2000 hours.

Vishram Ghat
Mathura boasts 25 ghats. Of all these, the Vishram Ghats commands the most significance. According to Hindu belief, Lord Krishna spent some time resting here after killing king Kamsa.

Govind Dev Temple
The most magnificent in Vridavan, the temple was constructed during 16th century by Raja Man Singh, ruler of Amber. The main architectural features of the temple include exquisite mandapa and elegantly crafted columns.

Banke Bihari Temple
Located in Vrindavan, it is the biggest crowd puller among all the temples in the city. Devotees have to wait in queue to be blessed by a glimpse of the deity. 'Mangala Aarti', observed on Janmashtami, invites hordes of devotees.
