India is one country where nature seems to have bestowed the wealth of her bounty. The Indian wildlife is famed all over the world for its interesting diversity and rareness. About 4% of the Indian land is under forest cover. There are around 87 National Parks, over 500 wildlife sanctuaries, 14 biosphere reserves, 4 of which are part of World Network of Biosphere Reserves, and 25 wetlands spread over the length and breadth of the country. The first national park was established in 1935.

National Parks and protected areas were established as a result of the threat that was posed to the very interesting and varied Indian wildlife due to poaching and human encroachment. Swarmed with unbelievable bio diversity, India houses around 7.6% mammalian, 12.6% avian, 6.2% reptilian, and 6% flowering species. India has forest coverage of tropical rainforests in the Andaman & Nicobars, Western Ghats, North east and coniferous forests in the Himalayas. Apart from these there are also the moist deciduous forests of eastern India abundant in sal, dry deciduous forests of south and central India, thorn forests of central Deccan and western gigantic plain.

Indian wildlife is one of the most prolific revenue generating industry of the country. For the convenience of the visiting tourists a number of travel and tour agencies are cropping up in the areas of wildlife interest to guide and conduct tours whereby tourists can have a glimpse of and ravel the experience of viewing the intriguing and beautiful Indian wildlife.
